Even When Students Attend College Distance Learning Programs Moms And Dads Feel Better Knowing The Ropes

Through orientations on campus and through online college and university programs, students get to know about support systems, organizations and activities. College and university campuses, as well as distance learning programs these days, often feature a mix of recent high school graduates and adults, many of whom might be parents. Adults, according to reports, are contributing to enrollment increases that this semester are reaching record proportions at some institutions. The reason, some say, is that people are looking for ways to keep their jobs or enter new occupations.

Still other parents are spending time on college and university campuses as well. In some instances, they’re sleeping in dorms and eating in dining halls, as well as meeting with professors, a Fox news report noted. These parents are participating in parent orientations that a number of institutions throughout the country provide.

With some parent orientations taking place over the course of two to three days, working adults particularly might have to schedule time for them in advance. Many parents, however, apparently participate. A representative of Boston’s Northeastern University, for example, recently told the Boston Globe that the parents of some 85 to 90 percent of parents join in orientations.

These orientations for parents often require fees and include seminars. “Helicopter parents,” as a recent edition of the Tennessean referred to hovering moms and dads, might enjoy seminars intended to help them let go of their children. Parents sending their first-born off to college or experiencing “empty nest syndrome” after the youngest son or daughter leaves might have an especially difficult time when colleges and universities open their doors to students for the semester.

Parents might have concerns about issues such as safety and alcohol use on campus – areas that, along with time management – many student orientations cover. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in August published an article that provided tips for parents who want to stay involved. Matthew Winston, assistant to the president at the University of Georgia, through this publication provided advice for students as well.

Technology makes it easier for parents and students these days to keep in touch with each other. Social networking programs, such as Facebook, allow for keeping in contact and sharing photographs and videos. Offerings such as Skype allow for video calls that can bring telephone discussions to another, more personalized, level.

While it might be difficult for some parents to let go, becoming familiar with a campus and its community first-hand might help ease the separation anxiety. Parents and students can also bridge the distance between them through use of technology. An author interviewed for a chicago Tribune article, however, suggested that parents and students should find the right balance in order for students to be independent. This also applies to students participating in university distance learning degree programs. Parents may be so impressed with today‘s learning tech that they’ll take advantage of back to school loans and return to school themselves!
